Affiliate Marketing:

By Don Bethune

Mostly an internet based concept, affiliate marketing occurs when a company has a product it wants to sell, and in addition to opening it's own online shop to get people to buy, it also allows other people with resources to sell its product and earn revenue.

For small companies, this turns out to be a better marketing strategy than just advertising because the company never loses money...It only gets lesser profits than it would have if it directly sold the product. Unless it is a product that revolutionizes the way people live their lives or do their work, it is safer to chose this method initially, rather than going all out to vouch for their products

But is an affiliate marketer like a salesman, going door to door, or more like a retailer who sits in a shop and watches people come in to set his cash registers ringing? More often than not, an Affiliate Marketer is an ordinary person who has a good running website with content related to the product they want to sell. The only requirement of an affiliate marketer is that he or she must have a website.

However, success in this field does not come easily. Merely having a website doesn't mean that people will come visit, and definitely doesn't guarantee that people will actually buy what they're selling. Having content that actually relates to what the person wants to sell on the page is the first step to success. For example if the person is selling a digital camera, she should probably explain the need to have a good digital camera, on the page where the camera is for sale. She should create, on a subconscious level, an urge in the readers to buy the product.

He will also need to get traffic. This is a simple process, albeit long and sometimes slow. The person should probably get some of his friends to feature his link on their websites. Directories and forums are also a good place to post his site's link. All these links help to increase the site's page rank. Good and plentiful content is still the golden rule of traffic.

These two things: content and traffic, will certainly allow an affiliate marketer to make good revenues from products while his own website gains popularity, like having one's cake and eating it too. Although it may sound pretty easy, it can sometimes be frustating. More than anything, patience is the key.

Because neither of them loses anything, affiliate marketing can be a boon for both the affiliate and the company. The company may no longer need to rely on affiliate marketers once a product gains popularity, as people will directly stumble into the website of the company itself,. But the company then also gains potential advertising through its affiliates.

The world outside the internet has also seen the spread of affiliate marketing. The success of Amway, Cossets and other such companies can attest to that. These companies mostly want their affiliates to pay a certain amount of money beforehand, to receive some training and then buy products to sell. This form of marketing, although not as profitable as online affiliate marketing, is a wonderful opportunity for retired people, housewives, and the unemployed to make some cash. - 15478
