Discover how losing a profile can mean losing a few thousand business associates.

By Dino Delellis

I wrote an article, several days ago that was recirculated a few tens of times online. I tried to capture a little bit of the angst being felt by facebookers who had been banned or suspended while simply doing their thing in the Facebook. One might define a Facebooker as someone who spends more than 90 minutes a day in facebook and who probably has it on their cell phone too.

Go ahead, say it - so what ? Granted that being suspended from facebook pales next to world hunger and global melting or is that global warming. But, if you were the cherished one expected to invite 600 wedding guests to your mother-in-laws anniversary and suddenly you got suspended after sending out only 20 invites, well you know then that being banned at such an auspicious time is going to look a little suspicious, right?

So, let me see if I got this right - 580 cherished friends of your mother-in-law didn't get their invite and you just got suspended from facebook while in this, the most tedious of chores. Better come straight with your mother-in-law right away, because facebook does not lift suspensions in any "reasonable" timeframe. And as for outright bans, if you were given one of those unjustly, you can try their dispute resolution email, however for all intents and purposes you are better off kissing that account goodbye.

Mom & Pop facebook marketing operations frequently lose their profiles when they are caught outright. Facebook has an engine in the background that watches for what is considered abnormal behavior. It has been tracking and analyzing normal user behavior inside Facebook for quite some time now, so figuring out activity that is not the norm and running that past its comparison engine that has 100 Million samples to compare with must be a thing of real beauty.

In that syndicated article, I mentioned the ease with which a user can *miss* an important facebook warning message. For many users, its simply an interruption in their smooth running thought process as they navigate from page to page within Facebook. Ohh, so easy to ignore.

However, what I didn't go into at that time was the myriad of ways one can get suspended and banned. Here they are, and facebook says that not reading the TOA Terms of Agreement is not an excuse.

Nudity. Is it art or pornography? Want to test the fine line? Well, if you want to Facebook is a great place to rationalize this sort of thing. If they deem that picture of your ex was not **Art** then art you go, my friend. Yeah, I wouldn't suggest you test them in this regard with anything less than a well recognized international art piece - lets say something of the stature of a "Mona Lisa"
Oddly enough, writing to too many people before they accept you as a friend - looks like spam.
Writing too many times in a short period of time on group walls. Stay under 30 per day and don't test that number to seriously.

Using images without permission - you are asked about this.
Using facebook's email facility as if it were IM or MSN or Yahoo chat. Odd that on a social network you can get banned for that, but there you go. Facebook has a chat facility and they would rather you use that rather than abuse the email in that way.
Promotion of racism, hate mail or any of the regular sort of utterances that would have gotten you in trouble outside of facebook too. People engaging in this thing shouldn't be surprised if their accounts are permanently suspended.

And my personal favorites:
Spamming your own facebook group 3 or more times per day.
After getting a warning, keep doing what you were doing prior.
Sending add requests to more than two hundred people that you dont know in one day.

The other "I got banned, woe be me look" is more frequently caused by the user inadvertently triggering a time constraint applied to **spammers**.

You can invite 500 perfect facebook strangers to be your friend but not in the same hour or day. Over two weeks or more would be perfect, but not 1 day.

If however you are reading this after having gotten suspended or banned, there is a resolution email on the site that you can attempt to plead your case to. - 15478
