If milk is so healthy, why do we wean infants from breastfeeding?
The purpose of weaning is not to remove milk from the diet. The purpose of weaning is to weaken the maternal-infant bond, so that the infant can be introduced to other people and other food. The maternal bond is the most powerful and enduring relationship in our lives. In fact, we never fully separate from our mothers. We just find maternal substitutes, like food, friends, teachers, spouses, and doctors. Our quest for maternal substitutes drives and defines our lives.Babies get some temporary immunity (protection) from mom during the last few weeks of pregnancybut only for the diseases mom is immune to. Thanks to vaccines, most diseases prevented by vaccines are no longer common in this country. Even the few cases we have in the U.S. could very quickly become tens or hundreds of thousands of cases if we stopped vaccinating.
